If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15
JESUS' COMMANDMENTS
The 4th commandment directs:
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
A MEMORIAL OF CREATION -- SET BY GOD HIMSELF
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11
Tragically, some Christians try to talk their way out of the privileges of Biblical Sabbath observance:
Objection #1 – Any Day will Work
Some people will try to argue that it doesn't matter which day you rest, and that really Sunday is just as good as Saturday. But that's not what God says.
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Luke 6:46
They like to get the drums going, raise the hands in praise, and say, “Lord, Lord”. While showing with their actions that Jesus is not their Lord.
Objection #2 – Sabbath was Part of Jewish Laws
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:11
The Sabbath was blessed and hallowed long before Abraham was born.
And it will be celebrated in the New Earth:
22 “As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me,” declares the Lord, “so will your name and descendants endure. 23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me,” says the Lord. Isaiah 66
The Sabbath existed from the beginning of this world's history, and will endure throughout eternity.
If you plan on being in Heaven, why not start preparing now by worshipping the Lord on the day that he has blessed?
Objection #3 – The Sabbath was Changed to Sunday
This argument is a direct fulfillment of prophecy:
He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Mark 7:6
These people claim to love Jesus – just not enough to keep his commandments.
7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men Mark 7
Nobody but the Lord has authority to change or modify his commandments, and since
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Mark 2:28
Those who love Jesus will worship on his choice of days.
After all, Jesus never changed the day from the 7th to any other.
Objection #4 - Acts 20:7
7And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. Acts 20
The disciples were eating together on the 1st day, and there was a sermon. This text nowhere says that the blessing God conferred on the 7th day had been transferred to the 1st.
There are evangelistic series where sermons are preached on any day of the week, but that still doesn't change the 4th commandment.
Objection #5 - Jesus is the day of rest / Sabbath
Paul handily dispatches this argument:
For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. Hebrews 4:8
And not just any day, since:
4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise,
And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
5 And in this place again,
If they shall enter into my rest.
6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
7 again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, Today, after so long a time; as it is said,
Today if ye will hear his voice,
harden not your hearts. Hebrews 4
So why harden your heart against God's holy day? Why miss out on Heaven over unbelief?
Objection #6 – My Church Worships on Sunday
Lots of churches do. But if you love Jesus, and want to get ready for life in the new Kingdom which Jesus has planned, why not worship on the day he blessed?
Chances are there's a Seventh-day Adventist church near you. Drop by there on Saturday mornings, and enjoy excellent sermons, wonderful fellowship, and heavenly music.
See if this Jesus-loving, commandment-keeping church is right for you.
